Parenting the Middle Years 2018 Aug

If your child is between the ages of 8 and 12 years old, you can safely guide him/her into the Teen Years without the rebellion or hassles often associated with teenagers. This course will assist you to learn how to parent your Middle Years child; you’ll experience unity, love and joy during those Teen

Pre-requisite for this Course: Must have completed Growing Kids God’s Way /Parenting the Tree Of Life

Course Delivery: The Preparation for Adolescence course is 6 sessions in length. Participants attend class once a week with other couples. Participants need to pre-read and prepare for each week’s lesson. During class the focus will be on case studies and group discussions. The learning methodology is socratic. Each couple will receive a course manual and homework to complete.

Session 1: Growing together through the Middle Years 
You need to have done GKGW to appreciate this series. In this first lesson you are introduced to the Healthy Family Profile. You will learn what “relational equilibrium” is. You will learn how to guide your child by your influence rather than your authority and how to handle the transition between childhood and adolescence.

Session 2: Deals with the Adolescent Challenges Facing your Family
What is Adolescence? You will learn that there are four types of maturity—Legal, Physical, Social, and Intellectual. What about the 5th one?–Moral Maturity.

Session 3: Influences on your middle year’s children including moral, physical, and peer pressure 
Gary asks the question–What is in your child’s heart? What about the influences of hormones and body changes on behaviour? Gary discusses the matter of peer pressure. What the group thinks has a very powerful influence on your adolescents. Group opinion is very important.

Session 4: The Importance of Communication
As parents – how is your walk with the Lord? Remember your kids are watching you. Paul says in 1 Cor 3:16 ‘Therefore I urge you to imitate me’. – Can you say that to your children? How effective are you at communication – in speaking and listening? Gary says good communication is going to prevent more conflicts than correction will resolve! He then goes on to suggest five musts for healthy preteen communication.

Session 5: Discipline Issues associated with Adolescents
How do you bring discipline into the life of your adolescent? This lesson reviews some of what was learnt in GKGW regarding discipline. You are reminded of the difference between childishness and foolishness. Gary will talk about punishment and consequences.

Session 6: Discipline Issues associated with Adolescents
The three most important things we need to learn about dealing with our adolescents are [1] Relationships. [2] Relationships. [3] Relationships. Dating has no biblical basis. Gary suggests dating should be reserved for courtship. Then he suggests some Do’s and Don’ts of dating. The lesson finishes with the seven warning flags. There is a lot of timely teaching in this lesson.
